![]() ![]() Sherpa boots absolutely work with pants and leggings on cold days, but unless you’re surfing on a chilly beach, Uggs with mini skirts and shorts just don’t make sense. I know I’m preaching to the choir, but there’s a right way and a questionable way to wear Uggs. In the words of Cher Horowitz, I was “adorably clueless.” You read that correctly, Uggs with Nike shorts, and I wasn’t the only girl in my dorm hallway who committed this appalling sartorial crime. I avidly wore Ugg boots with mid-length and long skirts (trying desperately to mimic that MK and Ashley look) and again the first year of college with Nike shorts. You’re definitely wearing a denim skirt and Ugg boots.įor me though, it didn’t stop with the jean skirts. You may or may not be wearing a Hollister graphic tee. You might have spritzed on about three squirts too much of Glow by J.Lo or Escada. You’re probably at the movie theater, possibly at an outdoor shopping center for a local concert night. ![]() Avoid “hippie” brands such as Birkenstock.Close your eyes, and picture yourself in tenth grade and on a “date” with the guy you have a crush on. Be sure to avoid a fashion faux pas and always wear your white socks with your flip flops. Sandals and flip-flops are another style that match nicely with Dad Jeans. We suggest those elastic Merrell slip-ons for occasions that require more substantial footwear. Avoid work boots, engineer boots, or cowboy boots, all of which are problematic and too self-consciously machismo. Skechers and Rockwell offer many casual grown-up shoes that coordinate well with Dad Jeans. Black or brown dress shoes are also unacceptable. Avoid “retro” footwear and brands like Converse and Vans. The best footwear for pairing with Dad Jeans are tennis shoes, preferably white. Be sure to choose socks with ribbing for maximum visual impact. Suggested brands include Izod and Kirkland, though other types are acceptable. White socks are a necessity and enjoy a nearly symbiotic relationship with Dad Jeans. The most important item to coordinate with Dad Jeans are the socks. This detail draws eyes to your white socks and tennis shoes, and looks more confident than the thinly-folded hems of “repro jeans.” Coordinate It Unlike the hems of Japanese “repro jeans”, look for a hem sewn with durable lock stitching rather than a flimsy chainstitch and most importantly, look for a thick hem fold. ![]() We find that at least seven belt loops contribute nicely to the Dad Jeans aesthetic – especially when coupled with a stretch waistband. Avoid the “classic” five loop design: there should be a minimum of six, preferably more. In fact, frequent tumble drying is essential for reaching the true broken-in quality and seam puckering of a good pair of Dad Jeans.īelt Loops are another crucial aspect of a good pair of Dad Jeans. If the denim is unusually stiff, we suggest doing several machines washes and tumble dry cycles until the desired feel is achieved. The denim of Dad Jeans should have an even hand and feel soft when brand-new. ![]() Dad Jeans should never be cuffed, and the hem should only barely touch your tennis shoes while standing, so that sitting down will show off your white socks. The ideal fit for the leg should be loose in the upper half, with a slight taper from knee to hem, so that the jeans accentuate, rather than swallow, your tennis shoes. Boot cuts may be acceptable depending on the circumstances. Low rises are absolutely unacceptable for proper Dad Jean credibility. A properly-fitting pair of Dad Jeans will have a high rise that should reach until close to the belly button. Dad jeans should not be slim fit, with the possible exception of the upper block. There are several acceptable fits for Dad Jeans. And because you should be buying Dad Jeans one to two sizes larger than your actual waist, you needn’t worry about stretch. Because Dad Jeans are necessarily pre-washed, you completely avoid the tedious struggle of sizing shrink-to-fit denim. What’s better are that the relaxed fits and large sizes available (often beyond 44) avoid the problematic thin privilege of elitist denim brands. Unlike “artisanal” raw denim brands, Dad Jeans are available to buy at Target, Wal-Mart, Costco, and Kohl’s, making them easy to try on before you buy. Entering the world of Dad Jeans is as relaxing and refreshing as their fit. ![]()
